Winnipeg Police Service Sex Crimes Unit has arrested a 42-year-old man after he allegedly sexually assaulted two referees while working with the Manitoba Association of Basketball Officials.
According to police the accusations date back to 2010 for the first victim. During an incident that took place sometime between 2010 and 2011 the first victim was in a closed office with the accused when the accused began taking in a sexual manner and then performed an indecent act in front on the victim.
In February 2020 the second victim says that he reffed an out of town game with the accused and when it was over the accused gave the victim a ride home. On the was the accused parked in a secluded spot and performed an indecent act before sexually assaulting the victim.
The second victim was sexually assaulted a second time in August 2020 after the accused invited him to a party for basketball officials. When the victim arrived he learned he was the only guest in attendance. The victim was then sexually assaulted.
On November 22, 2023, officers charged Michael Shane Maryk with two counts of sexual assault and Indecent Act.
The accused was released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada.
