The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) had a busy night as they responded to two separate fires on Higgins Avenue and Notre Dame Avenue.
The first incident occurred at 11:28 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, when WFPS crews were dispatched to a two-storey commercial building on the first 100 block of Higgins Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a scene of smoke and flames. An offensive attack was launched, and the fire was successfully extinguished and declared under control by 12:06 a.m. A thorough search of the building confirmed that there were no occupants, and thankfully, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, and damage estimates are not yet available.
Just over an hour later, at 12:52 a.m. on Sunday, May 26, WFPS crews were called to another fire at a two-storey converted residential dwelling on the 100 block of Notre Dame Avenue. Smoke was seen billowing from the structure as crews arrived. Firefighters quickly got to work, applying water to the fire, and had it under control by 1:57 a.m. Residents of the building were alerted by smoke alarms and promptly evacuated. One individual was assessed by paramedics on the scene but did not require hospital transport. No other injuries were reported. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was accidental, likely caused by an electrical malfunction. Damage estimates for this incident are also not yet available.
