Two men are facing weapons and robbery charges after police say they robbed a McPhillips Street convenience store early Sunday morning, June 11, 2023.
Police say that just after midnight, officers were called to the store in the 600 block. Two men had robbed the store and assaulted the two employees before fleeing on foot. Officers searched the area and found them near Manitoba Avenue and Sinclair Street. Both men were taken into custody without incident.
Investigators say that the suspects had entered the store armed with bear spray and a hatchet. One of the robbers used a disguise and demanded money from the male employees. The employees tried to stop the robbery but were physically assaulted with a metal object that one go the suspects had armed himself with. Both victims suffered upper body injuries requiring hospitalization. Before police arrived the suspects had fled the store with the cash register and tobacco.
Andrew Joseph Rae, 32, has been charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon and Disguise with Intent. He was detained in custody.
A 40-year-old man was also charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery and Possession of a Weapon. He was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada.
