Two in custody after police spot man with a gun

Early Sunday morning residents in the Weston area of the city had some excitement on their streets as police were searching for two men related to a gun incident.

Around 2:45 am Air-1 spotted a jeep speeding north on Osborne Street near Broadway. The vehicle made its way to a home in the west end where it stopped and a male with what police believed was a gun got into a Volvo sedan. The Volvo then sped off.

Ground units stopped the vehicle on Logan Avenue near Blaine Street. A passenger jumped out of the car and ran across Stanley Knowles Park as the Volvo sped off. The passenger was taken into custody after a brief chase.

The fleeing vehicle turned southbound onto Worth Street where the driver lost control near Aberdeen Avenue. Both the driver and passenger jumped out of the vehicle and began running East down the back lane. Damage on the vehicle showed that the airbags had deployed and the windshield on the passenger side of the car was damaged.

More than a dozen officers descended on Roy Avenue between Cecil Street and Worth Street minutes after the vehicle was stopped and began searching yards in the area as Air-1 lit up the scene from above.

Air-1 directed officers to a suspect with the gun who was crouched down behind a garage.

One person was taken into custody within minutes on Roy Avenue. Police seized a 5.56mm assault-style rifle during the arrest.

The officers involved with the search, including Air-1, then returned to Stanley Knowles Park on Logan Avenue where the first suspect had run through and searched it.

Two men from Calgary were charged for their alleged involvement in the incident.

Matiwos Eyasu GHEREZGHAIR, 26 is facing charges of Resist Peace Officer, Possess Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle and Possession of a Prohibited/Restricted Firearm with Ammunition.

Efren GEZEHEY, 23 is facing charges of Possess Weapon, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle and Possession of a Prohibited/Restricted Firearm with Ammunition.
