A 54-year-old Winnipeg man is facing fraud charges after he allegedly defrauded victims of more than $12 million.
The case came to light in 2013 when Winnipeg Police were contacted by two former NHL players. Christopher Phillips and Dany Heatley contacted police and reported the crimes they say were made by their agent and business advisor.
Investigators from the Financial Crime Unit began a lengthy investigation that involved executing a number of production orders so they could look into the suspects financial dealings.
According to police the accused used monies provided from the victims for personal business. The money had been intended for investments on behalf of the victims. The accused then provided false account statements of the proceeds of the funds.
Stacey McAlpine, 54-years-old, from Winnipeg has been charged with two counts of Fraud Over $5000, Laundering Proceeds of Crime and two counts of Theft Over $5000 for his alleged involvement.
