A head-on collision on Highway 12, north of Zhoda, has claimed the lives of two elderly individuals and left two others critically injured. The incident occurred on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at approximately 9:25 a.m.
Steinbach RCMP responded to the scene, located about five kilometers north of Zhoda, where they discovered a horrific collision involving a minivan and an SUV. Preliminary investigations suggest that the northbound minivan attempted to overtake a semi-trailer when it collided head-on with the southbound SUV.
The 76-year-old male driver of the minivan and his 72-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A 37-year-old male passenger from the minivan was transported to hospital in serious condition.
The 41-year-old male driver of the SUV sustained critical injuries and was also rushed to hospital for urgent medical attention.
Highway 12 was closed for several hours as Steinbach RCMP, along with a Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, conducted a thorough investigation. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
