Two charged in assault of off-duty police officer

Winnipeg Police Service has arrested and charged two people in connection to the assault of an off-duty Winnipeg Police officer on Saturday. October 21, 2023.

Police say that the officer was at the intersection of St. Mary Avenue and Donald Street around 7:00 am when they were approached by two male suspects. One of the males tried to assault the officer but quickly fled on foot.

The officer called dispatchers for help. While waiting for backup the officer found property of the suspects that had been left behind. Shortly afterwards a third male armed with a machete demanded the officer return the property of the other suspects. The officer refused and the third suspect fled on a bicycle.

The officer was not injured during the incident.

One of the initial suspects was found in the 300 block of St. Mary Avenue while the third suspect on the bike was found in the 300 block of Cumberland Avenue, a machete was found nearby. Both suspects were taken into custody with out incident.

Police say a 33-year-old male and a 27-year-old male, both from Winnipeg are facing charges for their alleged involvement of Assault Peace Officer. Both were detained in custody.
