The Winnipeg Police Service successfully apprehended two individuals following a carjacking incident that occurred on January 15, 2025.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., Central District General Patrol officers responded to reports of a carjacking with a firearm on the 500 block of William Avenue. A 43-year-old male victim was confronted by a 23-year-old male suspect armed with a sawed-off shotgun. The suspect demanded money and property, took the victim’s keys to his 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe, and fled the scene. The victim was unharmed.
Following the initial report, officers spotted the stolen vehicle near Sargent Avenue and Furby Street at 8:26 a.m. During a high-risk vehicle stop attempt, the 24-year-old male driver fled, colliding with both a Winnipeg Transit bus and a police vehicle.
Shortly after, the Traffic Division located the vehicle on Kate Street near McDermot Avenue. Four occupants fled the vehicle, with officers managing to apprehend two suspects after a brief foot chase. The remaining two suspects evaded capture. Inside the stolen vehicle, officers found the sawed-off shotgun used in the robbery.
Suspects Charged:
- Dregus Young (23 years old, Winnipeg): Facing multiple charges for his alleged involvement, including armed robbery with a prohibited firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a conveyance, and failure to comply with probation orders.
- Kayla Nepinak (24 years old, Winnipeg): Charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5000, and several firearm-related offenses for her alleged involvement.
Both suspects have been detained in custody pending further legal proceedings. The Winnipeg Police Service continues to search for the two remaining suspects.
