What started as police executing an arrest warrant Saturday morning turned into an all day standoff in Winnipeg’s north end.
It all began August 26, 2017, just before 11:00 am officers from the Street Crime Unit and the Tactical Support Team were attempting to execute a search warrant in the 500 block of Sherbrook Street. Police wanted to search the home of a 33-year-old man who was known to them as part of a drug and firearms investigation. The man was also wanted on an arrest warrant.
Police saw the man and a male passenger driving a truck in the area and attempted to stop it. The suspect vehicle took off at what police describe as a “high rate of speed”. The driver, in his attempt to flee, struck a woman on a bicycle at Arlington Street and Logan Avenue. He then continued on and hit a taxi before fleeing the area.
The female cyclist was taken to hospital but only sustained minor injuries. The taxi driver was not hurt.
The truck the suspect was driving was located in a back lane in the 1400 block of Magnus Avenue.
Officers quickly figured out that the driver and passenger ran into a residence nearby.
The passenger, a 22-year-old male, ran out of the back of the home in an attempt to get away but was captured. Once in custody police learned he was wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant.
The people who lived in the home were soon able to get out leaving the lone suspect in the residence.
For the next 9 hours, the suspect was in a standoff with police. After constant demands that the suspect give himself up Tactical Support Team members were able to take the man into custody.
Both men are facing a number of charges relating to the incident.
