Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to the 800 block of Main Street at 12:33 am Tuesday, August 17, 2021, for the report of a fire in a four-storey commercial building.
A second alarm was called due to possible fire extensions and risk to life. A second alarm increases the amount of equipment and crews on the scene.
Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building and although initially an offensive attack was launched crews were forced to transition to a defensive attack. Ladder trucks were used to attack the fire from above.
Main Street was closed in both directions overnight and the southbound lanes between Flora Avenue and Higgins Avenue remain close as crews remain on the scene.
Firefighters are expected to be on seen well into the day putting out hotspots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
