Transit Driver Spots Robbery Suspect, Police Make Arrest

Early Thursday morning, around 12:21 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service responded to a hold-up alarm at a business in the 1800 block of Wellington Avenue. General Patrol officers from multiple districts and Air1 converged on the scene.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers spoke with a 26-year-old male employee who reported that a male suspect in his 20s had filled a reusable grocery bag with merchandise and fled the business on foot. Thankfully, no threats or assaults were reported during the theft.

The police quickly broadcasted the suspect’s description citywide. About 26 minutes later, at 12:47 a.m., a vigilant Winnipeg Transit operator spotted a male matching the suspect’s description on a transit bus heading west on Portage Avenue near Main Street. The operator alerted police, who then responded to the area.

Officers successfully located the suspect at the intersection of Vaughan Street and Ellice Avenue. He was taken into custody without incident, and the stolen merchandise was recovered.

The suspect, identified as 23-year-old Joshua Fieting of Winnipeg, has been charged for his alleged involvement with Theft Under $5000 and Failure to Comply with a Probation Order. Fieting remains in custody.
