22 year old male suspect in custody
A Winnipeg Transit bus driver was assaulted around 2:00am Tuesday morning in the centre of the University of Manitoba campus.
Police were called to the scene to reports of a driver being attacked with a weapon. The driver was rushed to hospital in critical condition with injuries consistent with being stabbed. He died of his injuries shortly afterward. Winnipeg Police have identified the driver as 58 year old Irvine J. Fraser.
Police have taken a 22 year old man into custody. The suspect had attempted to flee across the Red River however he was apprehended by WPS Canine members before making it across.
The canine officer went back on the river in an attempt to secure evidence and fell through the ice. He was rescued by other officers on scene. The officer was not injured.
Police are not sure of the motive for the attack.
WPS homicide unit members are continuing to investigate.
The president of the University of Manitoba, David Barnard, sent a letter to all students and staff Tuesday morning offering condolences to the family and praising the Winnipeg Police Service.
According to Barnard the suspect in the killing of the transit driver was not associated with the university and that there is no ongoing security concern related to the incident.
