On August 5, 2024, at approximately 3:45 pm, RCMP Traffic Services discovered a head-on collision between an SUV and a handivan, on Highway 6, about 40 kilometres south of Grand Rapids.
Upon arrival, officers found one deceased occupant and several individuals in need of emergency medical services. The Grand Rapids Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services were promptly called to the scene.
The 42-year-old front-seat female passenger in the minivan, from Mosakahiken Cree Nation, was transported to the Grand Rapids Nursing Station, where she died from her injuries. The 54-year-old male driver from Winnipeg and another passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
In the SUV, the 23-year-old front seat female passenger from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation was pronounced dead at the scene. The 23-year-old male driver and two other passengers from Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the SUV crossed the centre line, resulting in the collision with the minivan. The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been laid at this time.
The highway was closed from approximately 4:00 pm until 11:00 pm. During the closure, many motorists opted to turn around after being advised of the long wait. When the highway reopened, a northbound SUV with a drained battery was unable to start. At around 11:30 pm, a southbound pickup truck turned around to assist, parking behind the SUV. All occupants had exited both vehicles and were standing roadside.
Tragically, a northbound van pulling a loaded trailer collided with the back of the pickup truck, causing it to strike the SUV, which then hit two individuals standing outside. Both were occupants of the SUV. A 33-year-old male from The Pas was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 36-year-old male from The Pas sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
