The results of “Operation Impact”, the Thanksgiving enforcement campaign, are out for Manitoba and it’s not great news.
Although 5 out of six categories saw reductions of offences the number of deaths and other related traffic charges are up.
Over the long weekend from Friday October 7 to Monday October 10 RCMP laid 12 criminal code impaired driving charges, 8 roadside suspensions due to alcohol, 18 charges for not wearing seat belts, 7 charges for using a handheld electronic device (cell phone) while driving.
Although those numbers were lower than the 2015 operation they aren’t great. Other traffic related charges like speeding actually significantly increased from 504 in 2015 to 944 in 2016.
Fatalities were up as well. Three people died in two different collisions over the long weekend including a 14 year old girl and her mother on their way to a family dinner.

“Educating the public in safe driving practices remains the priority of all RCMP Traffic Services Units and Detachments,” said Chief Superintendent Mark Fisher, Officer in Charge of Criminal Operations.
