Google and the City of Winnipeg are negotiating a deal that would provide real-time traffic data from the city for use in its wildly popular WAZE app.
News4 Winnipeg was the first broadcast partner for Waze in the Manitoba market and has been providing its viewers access to crowd sourced data since early 2016.
“When we were planning the launch of News4 in Winnipeg we knew we wanted to get traffic information to our viewers in as quick and accurate a way as possible.” said Robb Mitchell, Producer of News and Information Programming. “Waze is by far the best GPS based navigation app for IOS and Android and it’s free.”
Waze uses a combination of sources to deliver real-time traffic information around the globe. The app was designed to use community-based drivers to share information about traffic, lane closures, accidents and just about anything that affects your drive.
Over the past few years Waze has been teaming up with various transportation authorities around the world to improve the data that it provides by adding information from traffic management centres and public works crews.
In Winnipeg council is being asked to approve the use of data on a year to year basis. Google/Waze would be given access to information about traffic accidents, lane closures and traffic congestion.
