Cost cutting, health care and kids in care major issues in the 2018 government plan

With the delivery of the Throne Speech on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, Lt. Gov Janice Filmon outlined the Tory government’s plan for 2018.

Continuing its cost-cutting approach the government announced that it will be continuing to reduce the civil service, realign health care as well as introduce more public-private partnerships.

Changes to Child and Family Services that would make it easier for kids in care to move into guardianships with adult caregivers.

The government is continuing to reform health care and promises to build on changes to improve patient care across the province.  It plans to improve the delivery of health services and to reduce senior management and by trimming at the top to ensure maximum resources are dedicated to front-line care.

As part of the health care reform, the government plans on improving self and family managed home care with programs such as the previously announced Priority Home program that will shorten hospital stays. Resources will also be put into the prevention of chronic disease prevention.

The Tories also plan to continue reducing red tape, restructuring economic development efforts to better attract new investments, work to improve the economy of northern Manitoba and introduce legislation to fully implement a new Canadian Free Trade Agreement.
