Three more presumptive COVID-19 cases in Manitoba, say officials

UPDATED

Manitoba’s chief public health officer, Dr Brent Roussin announced on Sunday March 15, 2020, that there are three more presumptive cases of COVID-19 in the province.

Officials say a man in his 70s, a woman in her 70s and a woman in her 50s are the latest cases. It is believed that all three had recently returned for international travel where they are believed to have come in contact with the virus.

The woman in her 70s lives in a community within the Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority. The other two live in Winnipeg.

It is advised that all Manitobans cancel or post-pone any non-essential international travel, including to the United States.

Those returning to the province should self-isolate and self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after returning to Canada.

Public health officials are working to develop guidelines for the screening of Manitoba health-care workers returning to Canada following international travel.

Thompson will be opening a screen centre for COVID-19 in the Thompson Clinic in the Plaza Mall.

Over the past three days 900 people have been tested for the virus at the four Winnipeg screening centres. These centres are not walk-in clinics. If you develop cold or flu-like symptoms after returning from international travel within 14 days contact Health Links 204-788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257.

The province reminds people to take prevention measures including washing of hands regularly with soap and water for a minimum of 15 seconds. Remember to dry hands thoroughly. An alcohol-based hand cleanser can also be used if hands are not visibly dirty.

Cover your mouth and nose when cuffing or sneezing with a tissue or with your sleeve.
