Three injured during serious assault on Carlton Street

A 52-year-old man is in custody after he allegedly seriously assaulted a man in the early morning of Sunday, August 217, 2017.

It happened just after 1:30 am. The suspect was rummaging through a garbage bin behind a building in the 100 block of Carlton Street when he was confronted by a man who lived nearby.

The suspect grabbed a weapon and viciously attacked the victim knocking him unconscious and causing significant injuries to his upper body.

A woman and a male security guard heard the assault taking place and came out of the building and tried to stop the assault and help the injured male but they were both assaulted as well and had to flee back into the building.

The suspect then used the weapon and damaged a door and nearby vehicle. He then took off but was chased by the security guard and a passer-by.

Police arrested the suspect inside a building on Carlton close to where the assaults took place.

The injured man was taken to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable. The woman was treated and released for injuries she suffered to her head and the security guard received only minor injuries.

Michael Thomas Kerr from Winnipeg has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Assault Cause Bodily Harm, Assault with a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon, Mischief under $5,000 (x2)

He was detained in custody.
