Three firefighters injured while fighting vacant house fire

Just before 9:00 pm on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, firefighters responded to a vacant two-and-a-half storey, multi-family residence in the 600 block of Toronto Street.

When crews arrived they found the fire fully involved with heavy smoke and flames. Due to unsafe conditions, a defensive attack was launched using hand lines and an aerial ladder truck.

Thick smoke blanketed the area as crews worked to knock down the flames. Eventually, once conditions improved, firefighters were able to enter the structure and attack the blaze offensively. The fire was declared under control at 10:49 pm.

No one was located inside the house following a search. Homes on either side of the structure were evacuated as a precaution.

During the incident, three firefighters were injured while fighting the fire. all three were assessed by paramedics and transported to hospital in stable condition for further evaluation.

The building suffered significant fire, smoke and water damage. A neighbouring house sustained exposure damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
