Three early morning fires kept emergency crews busy Sunday November 15, 2020, tying up resources for hours at a time.
Union Avenue
Winnipeg Fire Paramedics were called to the first fire in a vacant home in the 200 block of Union Avenue West around 12:20 am.
Heavy smoke and flames could be seen coming from the one-storey structure as multiple fire crews arrived on the scene. A defensive attack was launched using handlines and an aerial ladder truck.
The fire was declared under control by 1:08 am but not before the roof had collapsed and the building had been gutted by flames.
Dufferin Avenue
The second fire call came in around 1:26 am for a fire in the 500 block of Dufferin Avenue.
As crews pulled up to the scene smoke was seen coming from the rear of the building. An offensive attack was initially launched but due to conditions inside firefighters transitioned to a defensive attack as thick black smoke made it difficult for crews.
A ladder truck was set up and firefighters used it as a platform to punch holes in the roof giving them access to the fire from above. Buildings on either side of the fire were protected in order to avoid the blaze extending into them.
The fire was declared under control at 5:19 am.
Dowling Avenue East
The third fire of the morning came in around 3:25 am in the East End of the city on Dowling Street.
When crews arrived smoke could be seen coming from the house and crews launched an offensive attack in the one-storey home.
The fire was declared under control at 4:18 am.
No injuries were reported in any of the fires and all three are under investigation.
