A defensive attack was launched using aerial ladder trucks to knock down the flames and protect neighbouring buildings. Fire has extended to two adjacent multi-storey condo buildings west of the initial fire as well as a parking garage.

Crews launched an offensive attack inside the condo buildings have been able keep the fire from destroying them.

Large groups of spectators descended on the park and sidewalks that surrounded the fire. Streets in the area were blocked by police to all but emergency crews.

Firefighters are expected to be on scene well into the night. Additional crews have been dispatched to the fire as weather conditions have deteriorated and crews need to be rotated in and out of fire operations to protect them from the conditions.

A Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service fire investigator was on the scene and is looking into the cause of the blaze. Officials say that the building under construction and the parking garage are a complete loss. The two condo buildings suffered significant damage due to fire, smoke and water.

No injuries have been reported.

Kimberly Avenue remains closed between Gateway Road and London Street until fire operation are completed
