Emergency crews responded to York Avenue and Fort Street after a male in his 60s was stabbed.
A motorist had flagged down officers who located the victim and performed first-aid until paramedics arrived
The male suffered multiple stab wounds and was taken to hospital in critical condition. His condition has since been upgraded to stable.
Officers from the nearby police HQ along with cadets located five suspects on Graham Avenue.
Police have charged a 20-year-old male, two 18-year-old males and two male youth with Aggravated Assault for their alleged involvement. One of the adults is also facing weapons-related charges.
