Winnipeg Police received a report from a caller stating that a man he knew had texted a number of threatening messages and stated the male suspect said he would ram a police vehicle. The caller also reported that the suspect was possibly armed.

Not long after the call officers in a marked patrol unit in the 400 block of Selkirk Avenue saw a vehicle driving at a high rate of speed directly towards them. Just before hitting the police cruiser the suspect vehicle stopped abruptly.

At this point, the driver of the suspect vehicle, an adult male, got out armed with a knife and threatened to kill the two officers in the cruiser. Police tried to defuse the situation as it was apparent the suspect was in some form of emotional distress.

The suspect returned to his vehicle and took off but became stuck in traffic. This gave police time to box him in. As the suspect exited the vehicle with the knife officers fired a taser at him. Police placed the 42-year-old male under arrest.

He now faces charges of Assault Peace Officer with Weapon x 3, Drive Impaired, Refuse Breath Sample, Possess Weapon, Fail to Comply with Probation Order, Drive Disqualified

The man was detained in custody.
