A 44-year-old female is dead following her arrest by RCMP in Thompson on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
According to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) police had responded to an intoxicated person call and arrested the female. She was then medically assessed and cleared before being placed in a cell at the Thompson RCMP detachment.
The IIU says that the RCMP notified them that they put the woman in a cell around 8:15 pm then checked on her a 10:49 where she was conscious and breathing.
When officers checked on her 20 min later she was found unresponsive.
An emergency medical crew was called and they pronounced the female deceased.
The RCMP reported the death to the IIU on Sunday, February 2, 2020.
The IIU has taken over the investigation since it involves the death of a person in police custody.
The investigation continues.
