Winnipeg Police Service Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU) began an investigation into drug trafficking. Agents from the Canada Border Services Agency participated in the investigation that saw the arrest of ten individuals and more than $3.4 million worth of heroin and opium seized.
The investigation began in September 2022, and investigators quickly received and executed a search warrant at a home in the Maples. Officers seized four rugs that were laced with opium. The rugs contained 9.6 kilograms of opium worth about $2 million on the street. Officers also seized 227 grams of Black Tar Heroin, 20.8 grams of powder Heroin along with drug trafficking materials and paraphernalia. About $21,625 in Canadian currency was also seized by officers.
]Police have charged two adult males and an adult female for their alleged involvement with Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Heroin, Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking – Opium, Import a Scheduled Substance x 2 and Possession of Proceeds of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000.
All three suspects were released on an Undertaking as mandated by the criminal code
A second investigation that began the first week of February 2023, has netted police approximately 7 Kilograms of Heroin/Opium (estimated street value of 1.4 million dollars), approximately $473,480 in Canadian currency, approximately $120,000 in gold jewelry, drug trafficking materials and paraphernalia, a BB Gun
Five adult males and two adult females were charged with more than 20 offences between them related to drugs, property and firearms offences. All seven suspects were released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
