A 14-year-old male is facing serious charges in connection with a stabbing that happened in the Spence neighbourhood and a robbery in the Parker area of Winnipeg.
Police say at about 1:00 a.m. on Friday, June 2, 2023, they responded to the report of a stabbing near Sargent Avenue and Toronto Street. They found a teenage female there with severe injuries. The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable condition.
The investigation by Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit has determined a group of youths known to each other were socializing when a confrontation arose. Bear spray was used, and the victim, a 17-year-old female, was slashed with a machete. The group scattered and fled the area, leaving the injured young woman behind.
Police investigating the stabbing arrested a male youth they found in the neighbourhood. The youth was subsequently linked to an unrelated robbery in Fort Garry a few days earlier.
In that incident on May 31, 2023, at approximately 8:25 p.m., police say they responded to a call that two 14-year-old males in the Parker neighbourhood had been confronted at knifepoint and had their personal property stolen. They were not harmed in the robbery.
The 14-year-old Winnipeg male is now charged with aggravated assault; carrying a concealed weapon, prohibited device or ammunition; two counts of robbery; and possession of a weapon.
He has been detained in custody.
