A robbery and assault incident occurred in the 900 block of McCalman Avenue at approximately 5:45 p.m., prompting a swift response from the Winnipeg Police Service.
Upon arrival, officers from the East District discovered a 14-year-old male with serious upper body injuries and an adult female in her 30s who was also injured. Both victims were transported to the hospital, with the male initially in unstable condition and the female in stable condition. The youth has since been upgraded to stable condition.
General Patrol officers apprehended the two suspects in the 1600 block of Regent Avenue West and handed them over to the Major Crimes Unit.
Investigations revealed that the female victim and her teenage son, newcomers to the city, were walking home near Kent Road and Nairn Avenue when they were confronted by the suspects demanding money. Upon refusal, the suspects assaulted them with a baseball bat, rendering the male victim unconscious and causing lesser injuries to his mother. The suspects then robbed them of personal property, including a cell phone, before fleeing the scene. The incident was determined to be random, as the victims and suspects did not know each other.
The suspects, identified as Donovan Kane Tray Kipling (26) and Dawson Marcus Keeper (27), both of Winnipeg, have been charged with multiple offences. Kipling faces charges of robbery, assault causing bodily harm, assault, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, and mischief under $5,000. Keeper has been charged with robbery and failing to comply with a condition of a release order. Both suspects remain in custody.
The Winnipeg Police Service continues to investigate the incident and urges anyone with information to come forward.
