UPDATED
Winnipeg Police say that on Wednesday April 8, 2020 a Liquor Mart in Sage Creek was robbed. During the robbery several suspect had stolen alcohol while threatening to hurt staff. They feld in the stolen vehicle.
A patrol unit in the area responded to the call, spotted the stolen vehicle and began to follow it.
Police say that the vehicle rammed a police patrol unit which initiated the pursuit by other units. The stolen vehicle then collied with several other vehicles near Lagimodiere Boulevard near Fermor Avenue. One of the officers discharged their firearm hitting the 16-year-old female driver of the stolen SUV.
Officers provided first aid while awaiting paramedics. The female suspect was taken to hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead when she arrived in hospital.
Police say four other youth were arrested at the scene and charged with a number of robbery and property related crimes.
All four youth have been detain in custody.
Winnipeg Police Service immediately notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) who sent investigators to the scene. The IIU has taken over the portion of the investigation that involves the officer-involved shooting.
IIU investigators are asking anyone with information about the incident or who may have video footage that could help investigators to contact them at 1-844-667-6060.
Winnipeg Police Service Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the events that happened prior to the shooting as well as any related criminal activities.
“Our homicide unit will be investigating any actions, criminal acts that occurred before this incident and part of the investigation itself,” said Winnipeg Police Service Public Information Officer Jay Murray.
