RCMP in Moose Lake, Manitoba have arrested an charged a 13-year-old after several puppies were seriously injured and ultimately killed by a group of children.
The incident happened on July 6, 2023, in Mosakahiken Cree Nation. Police say that a group of children had been in a community park in the early morning hours and were seen hurting several puppies. A community member chased the youth from the park and found the puppies deceased including one that was hanging from a stop sign
When officers arrived three dead puppies were given to the officers. Police searched the area and found a fourth dead puppy. Officers say that all the puppies had been significantly injured before their deaths.
“This is a very concerning act for the RCMP and the community,” said Sergeant Rick Sinclair, Moose Lake RCMP Detachment Commander. “Many community members care deeply for their dogs. We appreciate the assistance we received during the investigation. We are working with the community and our partners to find a way forward, focusing on healing and providing resources to families.”
Investigators say that about ten youth aged 9-13 had been involved in the incident. Under the Youth Criminal Justice Act anyone under the age of 12 cannot be charged. The 13-year-old has been charged for their alleged involvement with Killing Animals and Cruelty to Animals, Causing Unnecessary Suffering.
