Teen charged after bear spray incidents on two transit buses

Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged a 17-year-old male in connection to two bear spray incidents on Winnipeg Transit on June 26, 2022.

According to police a passenger and the bus driver were assaulted with bear spray on a bus travelling southbound on Main Street around 10:30 pm. The suspect had allegedly started an argument with a female passenger and when the driver stopped the bus to diffuse the situation the suspect assaulted the pair with bear spray. While fleeing the bus the suspect kicked and broke the door of the vehicle.

About 30 minutes later officers responded to a second incident involving bear spray on a bus. After discharging the spray the suspect took off running.

Officers located the suspect in both incidents around midnight in the 200 block of Portage Avenue and after a brief foot pursuit arrested the male near Portage Avenue and Main Street. The male was found to be in possession of approximately 5 grams of cocaine.

The accused was charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon, Mischief under $5,000, Possession of Scheduled Substance – Cocaine and three counts of Fail to Comply with Release Order.

The suspect was detained in custody.
