Winnipeg Police responded to a medical call in the area of Alexander Avenue and Fountain Street on Saturday night, July 28, 2018, after first responders from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service reported an aggressive male.
Police say that when officers arrived they were threatened by the suspect and forced to fire a taser at the man in order to bring him under control. The man was taken into custody near King Street and Logan Avenue but experienced a medical emergency and he was taken hospital.
The suspect later died.
Winnipeg Police contacted the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) shortly after midnight on Sunday, July 29, 2018, to report the incident and they immediately initiated an investigation.
Under its mandate, the IIU is required to investigate all incidents involving police officers, off-duty or on, that results in serious injury or death.
According to the IIU, the investigation is ongoing and because it involves a death they have requested a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.
