Suspects caught after man held captive

On January 1, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a concerned citizen contacted the Winnipeg Police after witnessing a man leaping from a moving vehicle. The vehicle, which carried a Saskatchewan license plate, sped away, leaving the scene.

The police were able to speak with the victim, a man in his 40s, who explained that he had arranged to meet a male acquaintance to sell a pair of high-end shoes. Upon entering the vehicle to complete the transaction, the victim was surprised by a second man hiding in the backseat. This man brandished a firearm, and the vehicle rapidly accelerated with the victim trapped inside. In a desperate bid to escape, the victim managed to jump from the moving car, sustaining minor injuries and losing the shoes in the process. The victim declined medical attention.

Several hours later, with the assistance of the Saskatchewan RCMP, the suspects were located driving near Whitewood, Saskatchewan. The two men, Muhammad Ehan ZAWAR (20) and Syed Maaz ALI (20), both from Saskatoon, were apprehended and subsequently handed over to the Winnipeg Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit on January 2.

ZAWAR and ALI have been charged with armed robbery using a restricted or prohibited firearm and forcible confinement. They are currently in custody.
