Police officers assaulted during a tr​affic stop

Manitoba First Nations Police Service have arrested and charged a 35-year-old Long Plain First Nation man after he assaulted two police officers during a traffic stop.

Long Plain First Nation is about 115 kilometres west of Winnipeg.

It happened Sunday evening around 8:00 pm. Officers had stopped a vehicle after receiving complaints about it.

As officers were speaking to the driver of the vehicle the suspect, who was a passenger, became aggressive and got out of the vehicle after being told to remain seated.

The suspect then confronted officers refusing their commands. As police attempted to arrest the male he became combative and hit both officers and grabbing for one of the officers sidearm and baton.

The officers were able to subdue the suspect and place him into handcuffs with the help of a third officer who arrived on scene.

During the altercation with the suspect, both officers and the suspect suffered minor injuries which were treated at the scene by Emergency Medical personnel.

Steven Craig Peters from Long Plain First Nation is facing charges for his alleged involvement including two counts of Assault Police Officer, Assault Police Officer with Intent to Resist Arrest (x2), Disarming a Police Officer, Failure to Comply with Conditions of Recognizance.
