Suspected drunk driver collides with First Nations Safety Officer vehicle

RCMP are investigating a head-on collision in Norway House involving a car and a First Nations Safety Officer pickup truck.

The collision happened around 5:30 am Sunday morning, January 24, 2021 on Paupanekis Point Road in the community.

Police say that the car was travelling southbound when it crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and crashed into the safety officer vehicle that had been travelling northbound. Just prior to the collision the safety officer had driven onto the shoulder in an attempt to avoid the crash.

Four people in the car and two in the safety officer vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. All six were treated and released.

Police were unable to administer a breath text on the driver of the car due to their injuries so a blood demand was made at the hospital.

Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision. Road conditions at the time were not icy but there was blowing snow in the area.

RCMP continue to investigate.
