Suspect wanted for murder captured during McGee Street incident

Winnipeg Police executed two arrest warrants at a home on McGee Street on Saturday morning in the hopes of taking 37-year-old Terry Ryan Monkman and 37-year-old Dwayne Louis Simard into custody.

Monkman and Simard both had outstanding warrants. Prior to executing the warrants police took to social media requesting the public stay away from the area due to the possibility of weapons being on the premises.

Members of the Tactical Support Team and North District Community Service Unit executed the warrants just after 11:00 am. Several people exited the home including Monkman. He was taken into custody without incident.

Police learned that Simard was still in the building along with a 28-year-old Jesse James Daher who was wanted for Second Degree Murder.

Over the next eight hours police ordered the men out of the home multiple times but the pair refused to cooperate. Police believed that they may be armed.

At 6:40 pm Daher surrendered to police followed ten minutes later by Simard surrendering.

A search of the home uncovered a loaded sawed-off 12 gauge shotgun with ammunition.

Suspects face additional firearms charges

Monkman was charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
  • Fail to Comply with Probation
  • Fail to Attend Court (Release Order)
  • Fail to Comply with Probation (Public Interest)

Simard was charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x3)
  • Utter Threats
  • Unlawfully at Large
  • Suspension of Statutory Release

Daher was charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Store Firearm or Restricted Weapon Contrary to Regulations
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order

Daher was also processed on three outstanding warrants for:

  • Second Degree Murder
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Discharge Air Gun or Pistol with Intent
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x3)
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order (x5)

Second murder suspect still wanted

With the arrest of Daher was wanted for his alleged involvement in the murder of 29-year-old Mohamed Mohiadin Ahmed in October of 2020. Ahmed’s body have been found in the Red River near Churchill Drive and Hay Street. Police had determined that Ahmed had been murdered days earlier in a Fort Garry home.

A second suspect in Ahmed’s murder is also wanted by investigators. 21-year-old Evan Daniel Bill Brightnose-Baker is described as an Indigenous male standing 5’5″ tall and weighing about 126 pounds with a medium build. He has brown eyes and black hair.

Anyone with information on where Brightnose-Baker may be hiding is asked to call (204) 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at (204) 786-8477.

Police warn that Brightnose-Baker should not be approached.
