RCMP have shot and captured the man who had them involved in a major manhunt in Portage la Prairie on Tuesday June 27, 2017.
Just after 6:00 pm officers located the man who had eluded them for most of the afternoon. He was located walking near Highway 1 just east of the city after RCMP received a call about a suspicious man. Police are unsure how he was able to slip by them and leave the city and say they will be investigating how that occurred.
When officers approached the suspect shots were fired and the suspect was hit. He was taken into custody and transported to a Winnipeg hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Due to the police involved shooting the investigation is now under the jurisdiction of the Independent Investigations Unit of Manitoba (IIU). The IIU investigates all on or off-duty police involved incidents that cause serious injuries.
The incident began mid-afternoon when Portage RCMP were tipped off that multiple firearms were inside a stolen vehicle that had just entered the city.

Police stopped the vehicle and arrested two females who were known to them. The male suspect took off and was reported to be carrying a long gun.
Schools in the city were locked down and RCMP took to social media asking citizens to remain inside, lock doors and windows and turn off inside lights.
The identity of the suspect has not been released and police have not said what charges he faces.
