Winnipeg Police have arrested a 32-year-old male who broke into a Portage Avenue business on Thursday night, November 19, 2020.
Officers were called to the business around 10:15 pm after the suspect was seen damaging the front door. He eventually got into the store and stole an empty cash register before fleeing on foot.
When officers arrived on the scene they were able to follow the suspects footprints in the snow. As they got closer to the suspect he jumped into the Assiniboine River in an attempt to evade the officers.
Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service were called and they deployed their Water rescue members onto the river in an attempt to rescue the suspect.
The suspect was heard yelling at the firefighters to leave him alone as he floated in the river. Emergency crews say the man was in the river for close to 30 minutes before he was taken into custody by police with help from firefighters.
The male was taken to hospital out of an abundance of caution. After he was cleared by medical personnel he was released back into police custody.
Sean-Leo Monchalin has been charged for his alleged involvement with Break Enter and Theft – Place.
Police say that the suspect was also processed on two outstanding warrants before being detained in custody,
