UPDATED
RCMP are investigating an unprovoked stabbing that happened around 8:50 am on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.
Police say that a couple had picked up a hitchhiker on Highway 16 in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone. Shortly after being picked up the male hitchhiker attacked the driver and stabbed him. The driver was able to pull over at which time the suspect fled the vehicle on foot. The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injures.
As police were searching the area they received reports of a male attempting to enter vehicles near Highway 16 and Highway 50.
When officers arrived at the scene of the reports they found the suspect with what appeared to be an edged weapon. RCMP say that there was a confrontation between officers and the male which resulted in the suspect being shot by police. The suspect died at the scene. Investigators say that the suspect has been identified as a 31-year-old male from Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation.
Police are not identifying the male at this time pending notification of next of kin.
Police recovered an edged weapon at the scene.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has taken over the police-involved shooting investigation as they are mandated to do.
RCMP continue to investigate the initial stabbing incident in the vehicle.
