Suspect in custody after holding a female at knifepoint

Winnipeg Police Service has arrested and charged a 20-year-old female after she allegedly held a woman at knifepoint during an incident at a Selkirk Avenue coffee shop.

The incident happened around 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

Members of the Tactical Support Team responded and found a 58-year-old male suffering from a laceration to his upper-body caused by a knife. Police say that the female suspect had approached a 40-year-old woman and asked to use her cellphone. When she was denied the request the suspect reached over the counter and grabbed a large knife and waved it around in a threatening manner. The suspect then grabbed the female victim and held her a knifepoint to her upper body in what police describe as a life-threatening manner.

The male victim witnessed the incident and attempted to disarm the attacker which gave the female victim the opportunity to back away from the suspect. The injured male did not seek medical attention. The female victim was not physically injured. The female suspect fled the scene but was arrested by police shortly after they arrived.

The female suspect provided officers with a fake name but was positively identified during the investigation.

The suspect was charged for her alleged involvement with two counts of Assault with a weapon, Possession of a Weapon and Attempt Obstruct Justice.

The suspect was detained in custody.
