Winnipeg Police spent most of the early morning hours on Sunday, October 11, 2020, dealing with an armed standoff.
Officers responded around 12:18 am to a gun incident in the 300 block of Toronto Street. The investigation quickly focussed on a two-storey home just south of St. Matthews Avenue.
Within minutes of police arriving on the scene, they took two people into custody. A third person was inside the building and ignored requests to exit the building.
As Air-1 circled above the Tactical Support Team brought in the armoured rescue vehicle (ARV) and parked it on the boulevard in front of the house.
Tactical officers blasted the sirens and used a loud speaker multiple times throughout the early morning urging the male suspect to exit the building with his hands up. The suspect did not respond.
Periodically over the four hour ordeal flash bangs were deployed in the front and rear of the structure along with what sounded like blank shots being fired.
Just before 4:00 am police notified News 4 that they would be using tear gas and our crew should take cover due to the wind direction to avoid possible contamination.
Officers made one more attempt to have the suspect surrender. When he didn’t comply tear gas was shot into the house. Moments later the suspect exited the front door with his hands above his head.
Members of the Tactical Support Team directed the suspect to walk backwards towards them. He was taken into custody.
Officers then went into the building and cleared the structure.
The incident was over by 4:30 am.
It is not known what charges the suspect will face.
The incident is being investigated by the Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit.
Police say that they expect to release more information about the incident on Monday.
