The suspect who was arrested by Winnipeg Police after stealing a marked Manitoba First Nations Police Service patrol unit has been charged with multiple offences.
Manitoba First Nations Police say that the incident that led up to the theft of the cruiser began in the early morning hours on Tuesday July 16, 2019 in Waywayseccappo.
Police say they were called to a disturbance in the community about 317 kilometres west of Winnipeg around 3:00 am. According to the caller three men had broken into a van outside a residence and would not leave.
When police arrived they found three intoxicated males. The suspects refused to listen to the officer’s directions and one of them advanced towards the officer aggressively. A second male then pushed the first male out of the way and began advancing on the officer. The officer drew a taser and two of the suspects complied with the officer. The other male began walking away and refused to stop. When the officer told the male he was under arrest began to run.
The officer pursued the fleeing suspect and as he was struggling to place him into custody the second male stole the police patrol unit.
The second male made it all the way to Winnipeg when the vehicle was spotted by Headingley RCMP but they were unable to stop it. Winnipeg Police were informed and eventually were able to use a Stop Stick to deflate the tire on the cruiser and take the driver into custody
Dakota Wyatte Brandon has been charged for his alleged involvement in the theft of the patrol unit with Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Mischief over $5,000(x2), Escape Lawful Custody, Impaired Operation of a Conveyance by Alcohol, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Failure to Stop After an Accident.
