Suspect break ankle while fleeing from police, IIU investigating

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating after a suspect suffered a broken ankle while attempting to flee from Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS).

On August 30, 2022, an MFNPS officer responded to Roseau River First Nation for the report of a disturbance around 6:00 am. The officer located a suspect vehicle at approximately 7:45 am and activated his emergency lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The driver sped away and was soon observed sliding into a ditch. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended. The suspect had injured his ankle during his attempt to flee and was taken to Morris General Hospital. Medical personnel confirmed that the man had broken his ankle.

As a broken ankle is considered a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigate the incident.

Anyone with information or video footage that can help investigators is asked to call 1-844-6676060
