Suspect arrested in Ross Avenue murder

Homicide detectives in Winnipeg have arrested a 20-year-old male in connection to the murder of 57-year-old Brian James Brisson.

Brisson had been feeding stray cats in the area of Ross Avenue and Isabel Street the afternoon of April 15, 2020, when he was shot. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but died soon afterwards.

As the investigation unfolded police learned that another person, a 21-year-old male, had been cleaning debris in the back lane between William and Elgin Avenues when he was shot at. The shooter missed and the male was able to run away.

Investigators say they believe that both males had been shot at without provocation and that neither knew the suspect.

Police arrested Darian John Thomas at a Centennial neighbourhood residence on Monday, April 27, 2020.

Thomas has been charged for his alleged involvement with Second Degree Murder, Attempt to Commit Murder Using a Firearm, Discharge a Firearm with Intent and Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition.

He was detained in custody.
