Simard had been the subject of multiple warrants that Winnipeg Police were executing on Saturday February 27 on McGee Street. After an eight hour stand-off with members of the Tactical Support Unit, Simard surrendered to officers.

Simard was serving a 2 years, 8 months and 15 day sentence for Aggravated Assault since November 16, 2017. In September 2019 he was placed on statutory release but breached his conditions later that month and a Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest

CSC has not provided details regarding how Simard died but say his next of kin have been notified.

RCMP and the office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified of the death. An internal review into the death is underway as is required by CSC policy.
