Winnipeg police have arrested a man in connection with a brutal assault on an 83-year-old woman that occurred in the 300 block of William Avenue on February 25, 2025. Officers from the Central District responded to the scene at approximately 12:45 p.m., where they found the elderly victim injured and lying on the ground. She was transported to hospital in stable condition, where she remains as she continues her recovery.
Police say the victim, who was using a walker, was physically assaulted by a male suspect, causing her to fall. The attacker continued the assault while the woman was on the ground, fleeing only when a witness intervened. The victim’s walker and purse were recovered at the scene.
The investigation was taken over by the Major Crimes Unit, which identified 27-year-old Justin Aaron Michael Getty of Winnipeg as the suspect. On March 4, 2025, at approximately 9:15 a.m., Getty was arrested at a residence in the 300 block of Ross Avenue without incident.
Getty now faces charges for his alleged involvement of aggravated assault and failing to comply with a condition of a release order. He is currently in custody. Police note that the victim has sustained multiple serious injuries and is expected to face a lengthy rehabilitation.
