Suspect Arrested in Bear Spray Carjacking Incident

On November 4, 2024, at approximately 1:27 p.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a carjacking incident in the 200 block of Watt Street. East District General Patrol officers found a 22-year-old male victim suffering from the effects of bear spray. The investigation revealed that the victim was delivering a parcel in the 500 block of Harbison Avenue when he was assaulted with bear spray and robbed of his vehicle. The victim was treated by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Services and medically cleared.

Shortly after the carjacking, citizens reported a vehicle matching the description driving erratically in the area. Officers located the stolen vehicle in a rear lane near Bowman Avenue, east of Watt Street. After a brief foot pursuit, officers apprehended an adult male suspect without incident.

Braden Whitney, 18, of Winnipeg, has been charged for his alleged involvement with the following offenses:

  • Robbery
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Fail to Comply with Probation Order

Whitney was detained in custody.
