Suspect arrested and charged in 2019 shooting near police HQ

Winnipeg police have charged a 22-year-old Montreal resident with assault and a number of firearms-related offences in connection to a shooting on September 12, 2019.

Police say that the incident happened around 1:00 am when a group encountered a male behind the St. Regis Hotel. 25-year-old Haben Weldekidan was shot and came to the attention of police after going to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The shooting was heard by a cadet who was leaving police HQ. Police say a bullet narrowly missed the cadet and hit the Graham Avenue Tower connect to the headquarters.

Further investigation led to Weldekidan being charged with firearm offences after officers located a gun that had been hidden allegedly by him near the scene of the shooting.

On March 28, 2021, the suspect was arrested by Montreal police on the strength of a Winnipeg Police Service warrant for firearm offences. Member of the WPS Major Crimes Unit travelled to Montreal and brought the suspect back to Winnipeg.
