Winnipeg police have charged a 22-year-old Montreal resident with assault and a number of firearms-related offences in connection to a shooting on September 12, 2019.
Police say that the incident happened around 1:00 am when a group encountered a male behind the St. Regis Hotel. 25-year-old Haben Weldekidan was shot and came to the attention of police after going to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The shooting was heard by a cadet who was leaving police HQ. Police say a bullet narrowly missed the cadet and hit the Graham Avenue Tower connect to the headquarters.
Further investigation led to Weldekidan being charged with firearm offences after officers located a gun that had been hidden allegedly by him near the scene of the shooting.
On March 28, 2021, the suspect was arrested by Montreal police on the strength of a Winnipeg Police Service warrant for firearm offences. Member of the WPS Major Crimes Unit travelled to Montreal and brought the suspect back to Winnipeg.
Saleh Alimasi has been charged for his alleged involvement with Discharge a Restricted Firearm or a Prohibited Firearm with Intent, Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon in Motor Vehicle, Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition, Possession of a Weapon, Pointing a Firearm and Assault with a Weapon.
Alimasi was detained in custody.
