On Friday over the lunch hour students and staff at Kelvin High School in Winnipeg took to the field to show their support for the protestors at Standing Rock in North Dakota.
For the past several months thousands of people have gathered in North Dakota to protest the Dakota Access pipeline. The pipeline will carry crude oil between North Dakota and Illinois. Protesters at Standing Rock are concerned about the environmental impact the pipeline will have. They believe that the pipeline will contaminate the water supply if built.
Fort Rouge MLA Wab Kinew joined the students to support the cause.
” I think it’s really inspiring to see the students of Kelvin showing solidarity with Standing Rock because it touches on so many of the big issues of our time.” said Kinew. “To see young people engage with those issues, thinking about them, forming their opinions and then expressing them in public in a way that is consistent with our democratic process, to me it’s awesome.”
