Structure fire rekindles several hours after it was initially extinguished

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire at 8:50 pm in a two-and-a-half-storey multi-family residence in the 300 block of Mountain Avenue.

Smoke was coming from the structure as firefighters arrived on the scene. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 9:38 pm.

Everyone who was inside the building had safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters set up a fire watch on the building which would see firefighters patrol the site throughout the night to check for smouldering debris and hotspots.

At 11:52 pm firefighter on a fire watch patrol found that a hotspot had reignited the fire. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the building.

Fire crews were called to the scene and spent the next three hours battling the blaze. The fire was declared under control at 2:53 am.

No one was in the building when the fire rekindled. Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services Unit were called in to help displaced residents find alternative temporary accommodations after the initial fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
