Manitoba postal workers have voted with a huge majority to strike if they are unable to reach an agreement with Canada Post by the weekend.
98% of Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in Winnipeg and 100% of workers in rural Manitoba have given the union a strike mandate.
Talks have been ongoing since 2015 and the deadline to reach a deal is Saturday.
According to a press release issued by the union Tuesday they have asked Canada Post to extend the cooling-off period for an additional two weeks so the two sides can hammer out a deal.
Canada Post has been in contact with its large volume clients and has warned them to begin preparing for disruptions.
The Province of Manitoba put contingencies in place effective June 20th so that people who receive cheques and other services through the mail can continue to receive those services at government offices. POSTAL STRIKE | PROVINCE PREPARES FOR DISRUPTION IN MAIL DELIVERY
